They fled from central Mexico to avoid conscription by either the federal or revolutionary forces. Being landless peons they knew little about and cared even less about which power ruled the country. Under either regime they would still be landless peons.
Hiding from the revolutionaries and the federales they walked or, whenever possible, hitched rides on trains heading north, always north to the U.S.
After several weeks and hundreds of miles they made it to safety in Anapra, NM, near what is now the University of Texas at El Paso where my grandfather found work as a night watchman at the newly founded Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy (now UTEP).
